Music, movement and pictorial communication

On 5 September 2021, Between the Strings was realised as a musical and kinetic performance accompanying Piknik Pasji in Szczecin. The programme published on 3 September described music as a field of shared experience and communication, connecting the action with the diversity of perception among people on the autism spectrum. The programme announced pictorial messages using AAC PIC (Pictogram Ideogram Communication) and the use of Sławomir Mateńko’s violin collection. The combination of sound, movement and visual signs allows the composition to be read as an attempt at communication through several forms of expression. This is an interpretation of the action’s artistic structure, not a generalisation about all autistic people or a claim of therapeutic efficacy.

The production was organised by Stowarzyszenie A TO MY. Wojciech Król and Sławomir Mateńko were responsible for music; Maria Podeszewska-Mateńko, Łukasz Mateńko and Oskar Chmioła for movement. The programme envisaged approximately 30 minutes; the event metadata give a start time of 15:00 in Poland. The picnic was organised by Gmina Miasto Szczecin, Towarzystwo Wspierania Inicjatyw Kulturalno-Społecznych TWIKS, Fundacja Sektor 3 and Stowarzyszenie Media Dizajn. This documentation does not establish whether the INKU entry in the artist’s records refers to precisely the same presentation. The visual arts record mentions children on the autism spectrum, while the biography mentions people living with schizophrenia. This discrepancy is retained without attributing diagnoses to participants on the basis of photographs.
