5.6. Manifesto of Art after AI
Art after AI is a strategy for reclaiming responsible decision-making in a field where prediction, generation and simulated agentivity attempt to take over language, the image, relationships and the conditions of visibility.
Art after AI is post-generative when it appropriates generation and changes its meaning.
It is anti-generative when it refuses generation wherever generation violates a relationship, consent, memory, a body, an archive or the environment.
It is post-agentive when it works with an agent as a procedure, a figure or an interface, but does not confuse its efficiency with subjecthood.
It is anti-agentive when it refuses a simulated relationship wherever the responsibility of a human being, an institution or a community is needed.
Art after AI is a fifth strategy when it knows how to move between these four gestures.
It does not choose a single purity.
It composes decisions.
It uses tools only when it can name their conditions.
It refuses only when refusal protects something.
It reveals the process when transparency is a condition of responsibility.
It protects the process when transparency would become extraction.
Art after AI is not a style.
It is not an era after technology.
It is not a prohibition.
It is not a critical fashion.
It is not decoration for institutions that want to look responsible.
It is a situation of decision.
In every work, questions arise:
what data precede it?
what tools shape it?
what relationships does it create?
what visibility does it produce?
what does it automate?
what does it hide?
what does it allow us to see?
whom does it admit?
whom does it exclude?
what does it leave outside the image?
what does it leave outside the model?
Art after AI does not trust a smooth answer merely because it sounds competent.
It does not trust an image merely because it looks convincing.
It does not trust a relationship merely because the interface responds.
It does not trust accessibility if it is an excuse for extraction.
It does not trust refusal if it is merely a moral pose.
It does not trust use if it is merely convenience.
Art after AI defends time.
It defends the body.
It defends locality.
It defends untranslatability.
It defends the right to a non-image.
It defends the right to a description that does not reduce.
It defends the right to an archive that does not become a deposit to be mined.
It defends the right to technology that does not pretend to be weightless.
It defends the right to a human response where the system offers a simulation.
Art after AI does not have to defeat the system.
Yet it cannot give it the last word.
